Course lecturer:
Jen Harrison qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 2004 and has worked in both mixed and small animal practice. She attended the ABVA Foundation Course in 2006 and her passion for acupuncture has only increased over the last 10 years. Jen has been a member of the ABVA Council since 2011, and assists with the practical sessions of the Foundation and Electroacupuncture courses. In 2015, Jen became the ABVA’s first Coordinator and now works hard to liase with members, giving advice, maintaining the website and organising courses.
Jen now works part time in general practice and runs a successful acupuncture referral service
in Surrey.
Course Review:
‘I attended the above course on the 4/12/15 organised by ABVA and presented at the Greyfriars Teaching Centre, Puttenham, Guildford. This very smart animal care venue offered various forms of rehabilitation including hydrotherapy and physiotherapy for large and small animals based in Surrey. The course was conducted in a modern lecture suite attached to the unit. The program was presented by Jen Harrison which started promptly at 8.30 and finished at 17.30. There were 10 of us who attended from recent recruits to seasoned acupuncturist. The mix of attendees created very lively interaction and discussion which happened frequently throughout the day.
Ample breaks were given with biscuits, tea, coffee and a chocolate cake baked by Jen herself the night before. A full lunch menu was brought in by outside caterers to keep us going through the afternoon.
The program started with a recap of the foundation course which I certainly needed as I last did it over 10 years ago. The content was basic and clear and also gave us an introduction to TCM which the course is now offering.
As morning went on we were guided into how to incorporate acupuncture into our practices with some of us acupuncturists offering practical advice to the group as well.
The course then went through examining and treating the old arthritic dog with approaches to the selection of suitable acupuncture points for the various age-related conditions. A brief discussion was also given on vestibular syndrome, urinary incontinence, feline asthma and congestive heart failure.
The afternoon was dedicated to the examination and treatment of three dogs brought in by owners. We were divided into smaller groups and were allowed to examine, palpate and place needles in the dogs for the conditions we had diagnosed.
Jen was close at hand to offer guidance and advice. She was a great instructor with a lot of knowledge and patience which encouraged us to work through the cases.
I hope that ABVA will run many more of these courses as apart from them being helpful in guiding us in our daily practice, it also allowed us the opportunity to interact with fellow veterinary acupuncturist to discuss worries and fears we might have with our home practice.’
