Supplementary Days

The BMAS runs several 'Special Topic' or 'Short Course' days. These are for medical acupuncturists who have completed their Foundation Course training or for experienced practitioners who wish to refresh their knowledge.

A wide range of topics are offered, including Anatomy, Back Pain, Headache, Palliative Care, Electroacupuncture, Pregnancy/Childbirth and Women’s Health. All courses are open to BMAS members and to non-members.

Acupuncture and Women's Health

A specialist day focussing on acupuncture and fertility/gynaecology. Topics include: anovulation and polycystic ovary syndrome; vasomotor symptoms; pelvic pain during pregnancy; acupuncture and assisted reproduction therapy.

Acupuncture for Headache 

New NICE guidelines for the treatment of headache include a course of acupuncture. In response to the guidelines the BMAS is offering a course for acupuncturists focussing on the assessment, treatment and management of headache.  A one-day course consisting of lectures, demonstrations and practical sessions.

Palliative Care Day

The new one-day course covering key areas in palliative care including pain, nausea/vomiting, breathlessness and dry mouth, with lectures and small group work sessions.  Course led by Dr Graham Leng (Consultant in Palliative Care, Chester) and Dr Juliet Spiller (Consultant in Palliative Medicine, Edinburgh).

Acupuncture for Cancer Patients and Palliative Care
with Dr Jacqueline Filshie

Dr Jacqueline Filshie returns with her popular course on acupuncture in palliative care.  This course offers live patient demonstrations, together with lectures on acupuncture for pain and non-pain conditions, and covers safety aspects and future directions.  This course is suitable for doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and other health professionals working in palliative care settings. Dr Filshie is a Consultant Anaesthetist and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London.

Practical Anatomy and Palpation Skills for the Medical Acupuncturist

A one-day course for acupuncturists, consisting of lectures, demonstrations and practical sessions.  Covers palpation techniques focussed on soft tissues - in particular muscle.

Electroacupuncture Course

The popular BMAS Electroacupuncture Course, a one-day course with comprehensive presentations and demonstrations and a half-day practical session.

The BMAS has negotiated a special arrangement with Scarborough’s to supply AS Super 4 Digital Electroacupuncture device as part of the course fee. Every delegate will receive this machine which normally retails at £250 plus VAT.

Acupuncture in Pregnancy & Childbirth

A new one-day course covering acupuncture for key conditions in pregnancy and childbirth.  With lectures from experts in the field, breakout sessions to discuss case scenarios, plus clinical demonstrations.  Topics include: nausea/vomiting, pelvic girdle/low back pain, induction of labour, breech presentation, pain relief in labour, and birth preparation.

Self-Acupuncture Course NEW!

A new course designed to equip practitioners with the skills to teach patients and/or their carers to use self-acupuncture and covering related issues. Including evidence, patient selection, setting, risk reduction, information & training, contraindication and precautions, service delivery and follow-up, medicolegal aspects. 

Self-acupuncture can enable practitioners to better manage their caseload and facilitate self-management by patients. Useful in chronic pain management and in a range of conditions: constitutional symptoms/ENT/respiratory/GIT/musculoskeletal/neurology/psychiatric.

A one-day course consisting of lectures, small group work sessions, patient/caregiver involvement and demonstrations.

BMAS Points Practical 

The new BMAS Points Practical courses will follow a rolling programme of four days, focussing on practical needling of particular regions of the body.  A selection of the four days will be covered over one year. The four days cover the core skills training for the Diploma of Medical Acupuncture (DipMedAc). Other self-directed study is required to cover the knowledge and research base for the DipMedAc.

Gerwin Masterclasses

These workshops are run by Dr Robert Gerwin, a Board-Certified neurologist from Washington State, USA. Bob had the opportunity of training in the diagnosis and management of myofascial pain syndromes under the renowned Janet Travell, and now runs a multidisciplinary pain clinic specialising in this field. The workshops involve lectures, demonstrations and practical experience. Attendees will gain most from this course by participating in the practical elements which involve palpation and needling of the most common muscle groups affected by myofascial pain syndromes. Practicals will be in small groups, and attendees should bring loose clothing, suitable to permit reasonable exposure of shoulder and hip girdles, lower back and limbs, as appropriate for each course

Anatomy for Acupuncture

A one day course covering the aspects of human anatomy that are essential to the safe and effective practice of acupuncture. The programme is based around lecture style presentations using advanced 3D graphics and images taken from dissections performed specifically to answer questions relevant to acupuncture. Designed for doctors and allied health professionals who would like to obtain a better understanding of anatomy or for those who simply want to polish up their skills.
