About the Foundation Course

The online module course is made up of 24 modules available on line via the website, these are available for immediate start.  Each module has one or two video lectures followed by multiple choice questions covering the theory of the Foundation course. Needles and sharps boxes are provided for self needling whilst completing the modules (UK mainland only).  Course notes are available free to download, if a paper version is preferred there is an additional cost of £20 to cover p & p; this can be ordered at the time of booking.

The course is then completed by attending 2 days of face to face needling sessions where attendees will be observed by an experienced demonstrator to ensure a safe needling technique.  Attendance on the practical element of the course is subject to completion of 12 modules and proof of Hepatitis B immunisation showing antibody level or results of a recent blood screen for Hep B surface antigens. Please read this policy before proceeding: HEPATITIS B POLICY.   A light lunch is provided during these sessions.

BMAS membership is a requisite for completing the course and is included in the course cost for the first year.  If the course is not completed within the year membership becomes due for renewal at a cost of £120.

Lecturing teams are made up of experienced medical acupuncturists. The performance of lecturers and group leaders is critically assessed to maintain a high standard. Teaching on the Foundation Course is based on scientific explanations of acupuncture.

Ladies: There is no evidence that acupuncture is harmful in pregnancy. If you are or suspect you may be pregnant; however, you should bring this to the attention of the teaching staff as it may affect how much needling you receive in the practical sessions.

UK & Ireland medical students (4th and 5th year) and final-year UK & Ireland students of professions eligible for membership (undergraduates undertaking their first degree) can attend our Foundation Course. There is a generous student discount.

On completion of the course we would expect you to be equipped to start practising Western medical acupuncture, and to be committed to completing the BMAS Certificate in Medical Acupuncture within 12 months of the course. On achieving this award BMAS would consider the student to have reached a satisfactory standard for the use of Western medical acupuncture within their existing scope of professional practice.
