BMAS CPD Categories

Below are the BMAS CPD guidelines showing the different categories and max/min hours required for submission for Accreditation and Reaccreditation.  

A. PARTICIPATION LEARNING

  • Annual CPD - Min 3 hours
  • Accreditation - Min 50 hours
  • Reaccreditation - Min 15 hours
  1. Courses
    1. BMAS Courses (CPD time - generally 6 hours per day)
    2. Non BMAS WMA Courses (CPD time, but if not CPD approved the programme may be used **)
    3. Non BMAS TCM-based Courses (half of programme time up to half total required hours)
  2. BMAS and National Meetings
    1. BMAS Scientific Meetings (CPD time - generally 6 hours per day)
    2. Webcasts of BMAS meetings (CPD time in Category A on submisson of reflective learning, only if not already claimed in 2a above)
    3. ICMART and International Symposia (Programme time)
    4. Non BMAS WMA Meetings (CPD time, but if not CPD approved the programme may be used**)
    5. Non BMAS TCM-based Meetings (half of programme time up to half total required hours)
    6. BMAS Regional Group meetings
    7. BMAS Blog Webinars - (CPD time in Category A on completion of reflective notes, sign in required during the live webinar)
  3. Acupuncture Clinics
    1. BMAS London Teaching Clinic – attendance as trainee or observer (Clinic time)
    2. Clinics run by BMAS member with the DipMedAc – attendance as trainee or observer (Clinic time – certified by supervising accredited member)
    3. Other clinics – up to 1 hour per nominal half day session by submission of reflective learning

B. DISTANCE LEARNING 

  • Annual CPD - Max 2 hours
  • Accreditation - Max 30 hours
  • Reaccreditation - Max 10 hours
  1. BMAS Webcasts by submission of reflective learning (half of CPD time may be claimed here in addition for those who attended the meeting and claimed CPD hours in Category A 2a above)
  2. Acupuncture books - up to 2 hours per item, by submission of reflective learning
  3. Journals - up to 2hrs per item, by submission of reflective learning

C. PREPARATION LEARNING

  • Annual CPD - Max 1 hours
  • Accreditation - Max 10 hours
  • Reaccreditation - Max 5 hours
  1. Presentation of lecture, research paper or poster
    1. to BMAS or ICMART (3 hours)
    2. to medical audience or nursing, physiotherapy, dental or veterinary audience (3 hours)
    3. to lay audience (2 hours)
  2. Media interview
    1. Broadcast TV or Radio (1 hour)
  3. Publication of article - if based on a presentation the maximum combined time of 4 hours is awarded
    1. in an acupuncture journal (3 hours)
    2. in any other medical journal (3 hours)
    3. in the lay press (2 hours)
  4. Research and audit
    1. Preparation (2 hours)
    2. Publication (+1 hour)

D. RELATED MEDICAL LEARNING

  • Annual CPD - Max 1 hours
  • Accreditation - Max 10 hours
  • Reaccreditation - Max 5 hours
  1. Basic Medical Sciences
  2. Neurophysiology
  3. Pain Management
  4. Neurology
  5. Rheumatology
  6. Orthopaedics
  7. Sports Injuries
  8. Lectures or case presentations (CPD time)
  9. Out-patient observer (Clinic time)
  10. Books & journals - up to 2 hours per item by submission of reflective learning

**For non-BMAS courses or meetings a copy of the programme and certificate of attendance should be supplied and reflective notes, stating why you think the course is relevant to your acupuncture practice.

Accreditation - 100 hours are required
Reaccreditation - 30 hours required every 5 years
Annual CPD - To remain on Find a Practitioner on the BMAS website 6 hours or more acupuncture related CPD, obtained within the last 12 months, is required in the above areas.
