Acupuncture in Pregnancy & Childbirth
A one-day course on obstetric acupuncture aimed at all health professionals who may come into contact with pregnant women - led by Dr David Carr and Jeanne Lythgoe.
Midwives and trainees/consultants in Obstetrics and Gynaecology or Obstetric Anaesthesia will gain an overview of the applications of acupuncture within maternity care and have the opportunity to experience acupuncture. For those interested in becoming accredited medical acupuncturists this course can be combined with a BMAS foundation course to provide a customised training package.
For those already practising medical acupuncture, it will serve as a supplementary course and offer a comprehensive review of the current evidence base underlying the use of acupuncture in pregnancy and childbirth. It will also provide the opportunity to consolidate the clinical approach to a number of problems through case-based discussion, clinical demonstrations and practical points sessions focussing on the most important acupoints for obstetric indications.
Lectures and cases will include the following:
Pregnancy-associated nausea and vomiting (morning sickness / hyperemesis gravidarum)
Intrapartum care (including acupuncture analgesia and augmentation of labour)
Pregnancy-associated pelvic girdle pain and low back pain
Induction of labour and cervical ripening
Breech presentation (including the use of moxibustion)
Acupressure (for morning sickness and for pain relief in labour)
Perinatal mental health
Headache in pregnancy
